U.S. jury awards Apple $290 million in retrial against Samsung

SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - A U.S. jury awarded Apple Inc about $290 million in a damages retrial against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, restoring a large chunk of a historic verdict the iPhone maker won last year.

After a week long trial, the jury deliberated for nearly two days before reaching a decision on Thursday in a San Jose, California federal court. Apple had requested $379.8 million, while Samsung argued that it should have to pay $52.7 million.

Apple and Samsung have been fighting in the courts for over two years. Apple was awarded over $1 billion last year after it convinced a jury that Samsung copied various iPhone features - like using fingers to pinch and zoom on the screen - along with design touches like the phone's flat, black glass screen.

Earlier this year U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh upheld nearly $640 million of that verdict but ordered a retrial on the rest, ruling that the previous jury had made some errors in its calculations. Combined with the retrial verdict of $290.5 million on Thursday, Apple has now been awarded $929.8 million in the case.

Apple called its marketing chief Phil Schiller to testify during the trial. Samsung did not call any senior executives, a fact hammered on by Apple attorneys during closing argument. Juror Barry Goldman-Hall, 60, said the six-woman two-man jury discussed the disparity.

"We felt like we had way more information from Apple and we were left wondering why we hadn't gotten other information from Samsung," said Goldman-Hall, a therapist.

Samsung spokeswoman Lauren Restuccia said the company is disappointed by the verdict, especially because one of the patents in the case has been recently deemed invalid by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Apple is contesting that finding.

Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said it was grateful to the jury for imposing costs on Samsung, though she said the case has been more about protecting innovation than winning money.

Samsung manufactures phones that use the Android operating system, which is developed by Google. In addition to the fight over money, Apple is seeking a permanent injunction against several older Samsung phones. Koh had previously rejected such a sales ban, but earlier this week the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ordered her to reconsider.

Nick Rodelli, a lawyer and adviser to institutional investors for CFRA Research in Maryland, said injunctions are much more important in these legal battles than monetary awards. Still, he said, the verdict shows that Apple's narrative was persuasive to a second jury drawn from Silicon Valley.

"A jury award on the high end of the range is a modestly positive signal for Apple," Rodelli said.

Colleen Allen, the jury forewoman, said Apple did not enjoy a home field advantage from having the trial so close to the iPhone maker's headquarters in Cupertino. Both companies are global players, she said, and while Apple engineers may be based in Northern California, its products are manufactured overseas.

The jurors based their decision on the evidence, said Allen, a 36-year old nurse.

"Samsung could've come up with a little more evidence," Allen said.

The case is likely to drag on as Samsung appeals both verdicts, said Brian Love, a professor at Santa Clara Law in Silicon Valley.

"Litigation between the parties is far from over, and there is no end in sight," Love said.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California is Apple Inc vs. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, 11-1846.

BlackBerry 10.2.1 to receive improved Android Runtime

BlackBerry revealed some of the improvements that will come with the 10.2.1 version of the BlackBerry OS. The latest version of the OS will feature improved Android Runtime, thus allowing wider range of Android apps to run on the supported devices. BlackBerry announced that the 10.2.1 SDK for their mobile operating system will soon be available to developers and testers. A beta release of BlackBerry Tools for Android with new featured and several bug fixes will also be available.

Here is the changelog with some of the upcoming improvements:

Android Native Support: Android apps that use shared libraries written in native-code, such as C and C++, will now be supported on BlackBerry 10

Support is limited to the recommended system headers and APIs as documented by Google. Headers and APIs outside this scope may not function correctly.

Bluetooth: Android applications using Android Bluetooth APIs will now work on BlackBerry 10. Bluetooth Low Energy for Android is planned to be supported in a future OS release. As a reminder, Bluetooth LE is supported in the BlackBerry 10 Native/Cascades SDK.

MapView v1: Applications that use MapView from Google Maps v1 API are now supported using OpenStreetMaps. Support for MapView v2 API is being planned for a future release.

Share Framework: Android applications that register with the share framework in Android will now also appear as share targets on the BlackBerry 10 share menu.

Spellcheck: Applications that use text input can now leverage support for spell checking and correction, and the ability to add words to the BlackBerry 10 dictionary.

6.44 inch ZTE Nubia Z7 caught on film; device matches Sony Xperia Z Ultra's screen size

Depending on the survey you look at, Chinese handset manufacturer ZTE is either the 4th or 5th leading smartphone producer globally. But as executive vice president He Shiyou said on Monday, ZTE wants to move into the top tier of handset producers, a level currently inhabited by Apple and Samsung. To reach that goal, ZTE is no longer focusing on entry level models and is concentrating on highly spec'd devices like the ZTE Nubia Z5S it just introduced Tuesday morning.

The 6.44 inch screen on the ZTE Nubia Z7 matches the size of the panel on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra

The 6.44 inch screen on the ZTE Nubia Z7 matches the size of the panel on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Another model, not announced today but spotted in a photograph, is the rumored ZTE Nubia Z7. Looking at the photograph, the handset might seem massive in size, and that is because it is. The screen measures 6.44 inches and if that number sounds familiar, that is because it matches the 6.44 inch screen found on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which currently sports the largest sized smartphone screen in the industry.

The ZTE Nubia Z7 supposedly is powered by the more powerful MSM8974AB variant of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, which is clocked at 2.3GHz. The Adreno 330 GPU on board the phone is overclocked at 550MHz as opposed to the normal 450MHz. It is the same Snapdragon SoC found on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Xiaomi Mi-3. 128GB of native storage is packed on the device, which uses a custom ROM based on Android 4.4, KitKat.

It sounds like ZTE is hitting the ground running as it looks to close out 2013 with some strong momentum.

Oppo VP resigns, escalating rumors of a possible Oppo/CyanogenMod smartphone brand

Oppo VP resigns, escalating rumors of a possible Oppo/CyanogenMod smartphone brand
A rumor got jump-started during the weekend, claiming that Chinese Oppo may be planning a separate online smartphone company that will combine the premium manufacturer's build quality with the famed CyanogenMod custom ROM. According to cnBeta, Oppo's deputy general manager is interested in starting a new brand, though things didn't really blow up until it became known that Oppo's VP, Pete Lau, has resigned his post earlier today.

Obviously, it's entirely possible that we're all reading too much into it, especially considering how hard it is to make a dime off smartphone sales lately. On the other hand, companies like Xiaomi have managed to make it big by going for an online model, whereby they forgo the questionable benefits of brick & mortar locations in favor of online sales. This model has worked a miracle for Beijing-based Xiaomi, and perhaps Oppo is hoping for the same.

It's interesting to note that Lau has since commented on Chinese Weibo that they're working on something that "may change the world of Android", not to mention that there's apparently a "perfect Android flagship device" already in the works. That one is rumored to sport the upcoming 2.5GHz MSM8974AC version of Snapdragon 800 – the most powerful yet.

As we go forward, it'll be interesting to see just how the new brand will be structured and whether it'll be tethered to Oppo from the very beginning. Turning to the rumor mill once again, cnBeta reports that the new entity will be actually started from scratch and feature its own designs, hardware, brand and sales channels, though this remains unconfirmed (and a tad unlikely?). If anything it's quite unlikely that CyanogenMod will call it quits on Oppo quite so fast, seeing as the manufacturer has been pretty involved with the software company.

Super-thin Huawei Ascend P6 to become the Ascend P6S and sport an octa-core chipset

Super-thin Huawei Ascend P6 to become the Ascend P6S and sport an octa-core chipset
Chinese Huawei's flagship smartphone, the Ascend P6, has been snatching some headlines time these past three or four days, mostly thanks to the announcement that it'll get Android 4.4 KitKat by January's end. Perhaps intent on continuing the publicity streak, Huawei's president himself has taken to Weibo (Chinese Twitter equivalent) to share the company's plan to refresh its super-thin phone with a brand new octa-core chipset.

It's currently unknown whether we're talking the upcoming MediaTek MT6592 octa-core chipset or yet another one of Huawei's home-cooked boards. If history taught us anything, then we should hope for the former, as the 1.5GHz quad-core Hi-Silicon K3V2E processor in the current Ascend P6 is pretty underwhelming. Speaking of the MT6592, early benchmarks are actually pointing to a pretty decent all-round AnTuTu score of about 28,000 when pushing 1080x1920 resolutions. Of course, you do have to keep in mind that AnTuTu tends to get a bit generous with multi-threaded scoring, though we're likely talking about little to no-compromise performance nevertheless, even on a budget.

MediaTek is set to release the octa-core MT6592, along with a new quad-core (MT6582) chipset in two days time, on November 20. The line of upcoming octa-core devices from China already stretches over 10 separate OEMs, so do expect to be hearing a lot more about it throughout 2014.

Mike Adenuga, 2face Idibia, D’banj, Wizkid, Davido, others missing at Peter Okoye’s wedding

Peter Okoye and wife Lola Omotayo at their traditional wedding, November 2012
Peter Okoye's wedding to Lola Omotayo was the biggest event this weekend and will still have many talking about the glorious nuptials till the year runs out. But with the number of high profiled personalities and celebrities gracing the event, a few stars were noticeably missing from the social event.

Big names like 2face Idibia, D'banj, Wizkid Davido, Sound Sultan and 9ice did not attend the event.

While 2face was a few minutes drive away from the event (the Pop star had a billed music performance at the 'DSTV at 20′ anniversary event which held at Eko Hotels and Suites), D'banj was stuck in Johannesburg, South Africa (where he had performed at the Coke RockCorps show).

'Loved the show but now I'm stuck here as No flights out today and now I'm missing my brothers wedding @peterpsquare', D'banj lamented on his Twitter.

Wizkid and Davido had performed at a concert in Port Harcourt a day before. Waje

Also missing were fellow GLObacom ambassadors Waje, Wande Coal, Omawumi, Bez, Burna Boy were also missing. Other ambassadors like Naeto C, Lynxxx, Flavour, M.I not only attended but performed for the couple.

The father of the day Globacom boss Mike Adenuga also did not attend as expected but was represented by the COO of the telecoms company Mohamed Jameel.

Let’s Talk About It! Akon & Wizkid reportedly Refuse Dark Skinned Ladies from Video Shoot in Accra | Request for Half-caste

It seems with Akon and Wizkid, it's the lighter the better.
Akon & Wizkid - November 2013 - BellaNaija
The music superstars are under fire for allegations that the pair refused dark skinned girls from appearing in a music video in Ghana. They requested for half-cast ladies.

Fashion Ghana is reporting that some Ghanaian models were asked to participate by directors in an upcoming video shoot a few days ahead of the D-Day.

A  model allegedly claimed that on the day of the shoot some girls were asked to leave as the agent for the video shoot, stated that "they (Akon & Wizkid) now want half-caste girls".

The publication also reports that the dark skinned ladies turned away, were asked to seek light skinned girls because Wizkid and Akon were adamant on the request on late notice.

We often hear in Hollywood, how dark skinned African-American actresses like Viola Davis and Gabrielle Union loose roles to light skinned actresses like Halle Berry and Nicole Ari Parker.

Do you find their requests offensive? Are they wrong for choosing the type of women they want for their music videos?

Let's Talk about it!

Anambra poll: Protests as Obiano maintains lead

About  200 women from the 21 local government areas  in  Anambra State on Sunday protested the conduct of    Saturday's  governorship election   in the state.
Untitled-1
They said  the election was not credible and called for  its cancellation  and conduct of a fresh one.

The  women, who  carried leaves , expressed their disappointment with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

They rolled repeatedly on the road leading to the INEC office   chanting , "Jega has failed us,' and   'He should resign or be removed."

A combined team of police officers and soldiers resisted their attempts to gain entry into the INEC premises.

Infuriated ,  the women,   who gathered  at Arroma Junction and  marched through  the Alex Ekwueme,     rained abuses on the  policemen and soldiers.

Spokesperson  for  the protesters, Mrs. Angela Akukalia, said many  people   were disenfranchised as their names were not found on the  voter  registers.

She said, "The election materials were not even available in most polling units across the state.

"In areas where they were available, they arrived so late and by then, most people had gone home.

"Even the rescheduled election in Idemili North was fixed on a Sunday when most people go to church and would not  be  around to vote.

"This was a scientific way to rig the  election. Jega has failed us. He has shown he is not capable."

She added that the "election should be cancelled because it is beyond Idemili North''  where the rerun poll in 65 polling units  held on Sunday.

Before the protest by the women, three   candidates for  the  election  closed ranks to kick against the conduct of the  exercise  that  their All Progressives Grand Alliance  counterpart, Chief Willie Obiano, was leading in 20 councils as of  Sunday evening.

The candidates – Senator Chris Ngige of the All Progressive Congress, Tony Nwoye, Peoples Democratic Party; and  Ifeanyi Ubah, Labour Party, at a joint press conference in Awka,  called on INEC  to stop further announcement of the results   because  of alleged widespread irregularities.

They claimed that the  conduct of rerun election in some polling units in Idemili North Local Government Area was a waste of time.

"They can do any amount of voting they like. But subject to consultations with the leadership of our parties, no result should be announced.  A word is enough for the wise,"  Ngige, Nwoye and Ubah said in a five-page statement.

They insisted that    fraudulent practices and massive irregularities that greeted the election  on Saturday  had made it  to fall substantially below the requirements of the Electoral Act.

They said the parties were deceived by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, who told  them  on Wednesday that the voter   register was perfect .

The candidates also alleged massive security lapse, which gave room for the intimidation of their supporters and agents.

They further alleged that there was a massive deployment of Anambra State government funds in all the polling units to buy votes.

Their statement added, "Some of the voters were paid as much as N10,000.

"Having noted these points and having noted the compromising stance of INEC officials, we have come to the inevitable conclusion that this commission (INEC) is determined to go back to its old ways."

- Rerun poll boycotted

They had before briefing journalists announced that they had  boycotted the rerun election in  in 65 wards in Idemili North on Sunday.

The election was cancelled in the   wards because election materials  could not be delivered there on Saturday, the day   of the poll.

INEC  deferred declaration of all the finals  result until  those of the  rerun  were  collated.

As of 12 midnight, electoral officers were seen arriving at the INEC office in Awka.

One of them told The PUNCH that the final result might not be ready until 3 am.

Ngige and Nwoye had earlier on Sunday morning also complained about the conduct of the poll and called for its cancellation.

While the APC candidate  had the backing of the national leadership of his party, Nwoye seemed to be acting alone as the PDP headquarters  said  it was satisfied with the conduct of the election.

- APGA praises election conduct

APGA  however praised the conduct of the election and said INEC had fulfilled its promise to make  it the best   ever.

"We are satisfied with the way INEC has conducted this exercise so far. We are thoroughly satisfied with the conduct of the security agencies," the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, said.

Umeh accused those that have questioned the credibility of the election of not being agents of the truth.

He added that they    were  complaining because it had become clear to them that they would lose.

On the allegations that APGA rigged the process with INEC, Umeh said, "We  will never rig election in this state. We believe in due process. We believe in the rule of law."

- Poll fell below standard–Situation room

But,  the Nigeria Civil Society Election Situation Room, a coalition of 40 civil society organisations that monitored the election,   said it  fell short of standards.

In a statement   on Sunday,  the organisation  noted   that poor deployment of logistics,   materials, and  incompetence of many polling officials contributed to the  problems that affected the poll.

The  statement  by the leader of the group, Mr. Tunji Lardner, added,   "INEC's conduct of the governorship election in Anambra State poses serious concerns ahead of the 2015 general elections and the Situation Room calls on INEC to change its strategy with a view to improving on its preparations for the 2015 elections."

Why Eagles played poorly –Keshi

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has responded to views by many spectators that the World Cup qualifying match between Nigeria and Ethiopia was not as entertaining as expected. The Nigeria manager, who spoke after the game the Eagles won by 2-0 in Calabar on Saturday,  said that the pressure of not making any costly mistake took its toll on the players.

He said, "Yes the game may not have been as smooth and as entertaining as the spectators wanted to be. That I agree with you. But there was a whole lot of pressure on the players not to slip in this last game after having a good run all through. At this stage we thought that bad style or a  lack of finesse should not count. What we wanted was to get the result and be in Brazil. And that was exactly what we got.

"We have a lot of games to play between now and the World Cup and those matches can't be like this one. When it gets to this stage what matters is to use the basic technique in the books to secure the result and move on. The beautiful will continue soon."

Keshi said the style of the Ethiopians added up to making the game beautiful. He said it was clear their opponents were determined to stay back and defend in numbers and that made  a free flowing game difficult.

"We thought they would rush out after the first goal but they didn't do that and so the game continued in the same pattern. If they moved out in a way that suggested they wanted to beat us the pitch would have been more open and then the style could have changed."

Comparing the value of the World Cup ticket he just secured with Nigeria and the one he got as the coach of Togo for Germany 2006, Keshi said both achievements were special to him but the one with Togo was unique.

"It is special to qualify for the biggest football event; both getting the tickets means a lot to me. With Nigeria we started virtually from the scratch to assemble a team that could go this far and so I am very proud reaching this level. And that is special. But with Togo you know that we had nearly an all-home based players and a country that had never reached that level and so it was very emotional for me. It's unique and stands out because we virtually got the ticket from nothing. But Nigerians are used to being at the World Cup and the players more exposed kind of."

On Saturday Keshi became the first African coach to qualify two countries for  the World Cup and the first African player to qualify as a captain and then a coach.

Specs-packed Samsung Galaxy J gets certified in Taiwan, may be just a lot of smoke

The 5-inch Samsung Galaxy J is perhaps one of Sammy's least-talked about flagships and that's both surprising, and not, at the same time.

Best described as the love child between the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy J was released on Japan's NTT DoCoMo waves, sporting some truly drool-worthy specs. Those include a water- and dust-proof body, a Snapdragon 800 chipset, 3GB of RAM and LTE-Advanced connectivity. What's perhaps even more noteworthy are the looks on the Galaxy J – it's probably safe to say it's one of Samsung's most trendy handsets right now. Unfortunately, at least until now, we've had no indication that the device will be anything more than a Japan-only type deal. This may have changed, as the device has been spotted going through Taiwan's FCC-equivalent certification, though this is by no means indicative that the device will see the light of day. Yes, that means even in Taiwan.

Pity doesn't begin to describe the above, though it's probably in Samsung's best interests to keep the Galaxy J a regional anomaly. Said otherwise, it could easily cannibalize sales of the already matured Galaxy S4, not to mention that it's bound to rake in lower margins. Of course, seeing as we're likely still months from the release of the next-in-line Galaxy S5, one could argue that should things go south with sales of the S4, Sammy has an excellent back-up device.

Watch Justin Bieber Shed A Tear In 'Believe' Trailer

Get the purple eggnog ready, Justin Bieber is coming at you this Christmas Day. His latest big-screen spectacle, "Believe," is slated to hit theaters on December 25, and with only five weeks until its release, fans were treated to the full trailer debut on Friday (November 15).

The trailer, which hit Yahoo! Movies after several days of teases, gives fans a deeper look at the flick. The movie serves as a concert film and a documentary, shedding light on Bieber's life since the release of his first film, 2011's "Never Say Never."

The trailer is full of everything a Belieber could ever want including shirtless moments, baby footage, concert reels with epic crowd shots and the 19-year-old star getting real about his public ups and downs, even shedding a tear.

He says, "When you've reached a certain point in life, there are people out there waiting to see you fall. But rather than let gravity take you down, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands ... and fly."

Ahead of the trailer debut, MTV News spoke to the movie's director Jon Chu (who also worked with Bieber on "Never Say Never"). He opened up about why the teaser is such a great representation of the film.

"I think a lot of people don't know what this movie is. What more story can you tell of the Justin Bieber story? And there's so much that has happened this year and last year, building the tour and his personal life, that we get to delve into," he shared about the release. "And you get to see the truth."

Rihanna 'What Now' Video: Looks Familiar To Us...

Rihanna is both "creepy" and "pretty" in her video for "What Now." The simple visual focuses on the singer as she mopes in a sparse warehouse space, possessed by her loneliness.

The video then steps up its game thanks to Rih's "demented" dance movements, beautiful clothes (which she has dubbed "red carpet goth"), the video's quick shots and edgy camera effects. And, whether or not she is aware of it, some of the scenes in the video (directed by Jeff Nicholas, Jonathan Craven and Darren Craig) pay homage to some of her past visuals. MTV News has rounded up those moments.

Rihanna - "What Now (Official)"

All Eyes On Me
The close-up in this new video looks very familiar to the one from her "Diamonds" video, also off her 2012 album Unapologetic. It's not only her dark hair, which is styled almost the same, but also the overall eerie, tortured vibe.

Blink And You'll Miss It
When the camera isn't focused on Rihanna, the shots shift away to b-roll shots of things like thunder, a tunnel and a gloomy sky, furthering the video's narrative about Rihanna's solitude. Those shots certainly recall the types of images used in the "We Found Love" video. Those shots, however, were used to mirror the frenzied nature of that clip and its dangerous love story, with fast-paced shots of blinking eyes and fireworks.

More For The Price of One
Both the "What Now" video and her "Disturbia" visual have a dark, supernatural vibe about them. And in addition to sharing that similarity, the visuals' shots are layered, giving off a sort of 3-D effect.

In The Ring
Rihanna's definitely got a sense of style, and just like in her equally simple clip for "Stay," the singer is wearing some bling. She's stacking rings on rings on rings in both videos.

Pull The Trigger?
Rihanna is pretty melancholy in the "What Now" video and much of that is exhibited in her actions and movements, which at times look a little bit like an exorcism. The video's space looks a lot like the empty cell she spent a lot of her time in the "Russian Roulette" video and much like in that video she not only lays on the ground, but also cowers in a corner.

Google Play Music officially launches on iOS, but lacks store

We've been waiting about 6 months since Google first said that Google Play Music would be coming to iOS (at which point they claimed it would only be "weeks" until we saw the app.) We've waited through rumors and reports of internal testing, but the app has finally arrived. Google Play Music is officially in the iOS App Store.

The app is quite fully featured as well. It allows you to access all of your own music that you may have purchased or uploaded to Google's cloud. And, the app allows you to use your All Access pass to stream any of the other 20 million tracks in Google's database. You can stream if you want, or save music to your iPhone for offline playback. Music can be played back at 320kbps and can be played back through any AirPlay or Bluetooth devices. There is also the recommended music lists (both algorithmically generated, and curated by humans), and the Radio feature which works just like it would with Spotify, Pandora, or iTunes Radio, although Google lets you add and remove tracks from the radio playlist, so you have a bit more control.

Google Play Music for iOS doesn't have everything though. As you would expect, the restrictions that Apple has placed on apps means that there is no way to purchase new music, or even start an All Access subscription through the Play Music app, but if you buy something on the web, it will sync to your iPhone. There are also a few smaller missing features like the "I feel lucky" radio option, but Google says it is working on bringing those in a future update.

On a smaller note, you'll see that the iOS Play Music app uses a new flatter looking logo for the service. We expect that will filter across to Android soon enough.

Apple releases iOS 7.0.4

Apple has just released its iOS 7.0.4 update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch lineups. The new software version is now available to all users with an iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad Air, iPad (third and fourth generations), iPad 2, iPad mini or fifth-generation iPod touch. The release is a minor update with bug fixes including a fix for a FaceTime issue that impacted all devices. It follows iOS 7.0.3, which was pushed out in late October with a number of updates, not the least of which was the ability to disable the zooming transition animations that were making some users sick.

iOS 7 was first released in September and according to Apple, it took less than a week for the new operating system to be installed on more than 200 million devices. We said in a preview that iOS 7 is more about renovation than innovation, but we also found it to be the perfect balance of new design details and familiar functionality. Not everyone agrees, of course, and the new mobile platform has been panned by several experts and developers.

iOS 7.0.4 is available starting immediately as an over the air (OTA) update, and it can be installed by navigating to General > Software Update in iOS's Settings app. The update can also be downloaded and installed using Apple's iTunes software on a computer.

Glo rated among Africa’s top 10 brands

Globacom has been rated among the top five most valuable brands in Africa in a survey conducted recently by Brand Africa to find out the most admired and valued brands on the continent.

A statement by the company on Thursday said it (Glo) got a brand value of 655 to rank high in the list of the top 10 most valuable brands in Africa.

According to the statement, the report was published in the latest edition of the African Business magazine and it indicated that Globacom made the list because of its ability to win the hearts of the communities where it does business.

It stated, "Brand Africa noted that Globacom, in just 10 years, has established a reputation as a strong African brand and has made a significant impact in the West African sub-region where it operates.

"In each of these countries where Glo operates such as Ghana, Nigeria and Benin Republic, the network has become a household name not only because of its superior service offering, but also for the way it has affected lives in its business communities."

Commenting on the development, Globacom's Group Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mohamed Jameel, said the company had worked hard to earn the recognition.

He said, "Based on Brand Africa's definition of an African brand as a multinational brand developed in Africa, by Africans, with a secondary or primary listing in Africa, serving customers primarily in Africa, with a growing international recognition or footprint and contributes to Africa's economic growth and global image and reputation, I believe Globacom deserves the recognition.

"Glo is well known for its outstanding performance in the countries where it has its footprints, for its contributions to economic growth and for its investments in sports, arts and entertainment. We have made telephony more available with our reliable networks and competitive tariffs. We have also invested heavily in sports in Nigeria and Ghana and the film industry such as Nollywood and Ghollywood."

The statement added that Brand Africa's founder and Chairman, Mr. Thebe Ikalafeng, who commented on the report, said one of the primary drivers of Africa's growth was in stimulating and growing thriving African and global businesses and brands.

It added that the study involved a comprehensive research among consumers of 18 years and above, living in representative countries in metropolitan sub-Sahara African regions being asked to draw up a list of the most admired African and global brands.

I haven’t lost my form, insists Mba

Sunday Mba insists that his form has not dropped despite failing to start for Nigeria in recent games.

Mba was the hero of the African Nations Cup where he scored not only the goal that eliminated the highly-fancied Côte d'Ivoire at the quarter-final stage, but also the one that decided the championship game.

Since then, however, he has dropped to the bench and did not feature at all in the last two games.

But the Rangers midfielder told KickOffNigeria.com that his form had not dropped.

"I'm still the same player, I'm still playing my normal game and I'm still doing well.

"Somehow, I can't say why I'm not playing but I believe the coach wants to change the team, wants to try something else.

"But I'm still part or the team and whenever I'm called upon, I will do my best and prove myself very well," he said.

The midfielder has barely featured for Rangers all season, after the club fought a bruising battle to wrest him from Warri Wolves on-loan.

He says it is not for want of trying, but is uncertain about whether he will still be at the club next season.

"It's not really my fault. I've been having national call-ups but I always try to do my best.

"If I'm still around at Rangers, and nothing comes up, I will do my best for them. But let's wait for the season to start and see."

With Nigeria facing Ethiopia on Saturday in the second leg of their 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier, Mba says he expects a good game.

The actress stars as Rosalyn, a bored, big-haired New Jersey housewife to Christian Bale's bearded con man, in the 1970s-set drama. Jennifer Lawrence Blows Up A Microwave In Exclusive 'American Hustle' Clip

"American Hustle" is a bit of a "Silver Linings Playbook" reunion for Lawrence, who won an Oscar for her performance in that film. In addition to re-teaming with director Russell, she also stars opposite Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro. Rounding out the cast is Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, with supporting performances from Louis C.K., Michael Pena and Jack Huston.

Russell unveiled the first six minutes of "American Hustle" last weekend during his tribute at AFI Fest in Los Angeles.

"I'm superstitious so I don't want to say too much, but I'm very excited about it," Russell said during the screening, according to USA Today. "We watched the film yesterday and it's wonderful to see when everything comes together at a higher level than it was before, even when you were excited about it before."

"American Hustle" hits theaters December 18. In the meantime, of course, fans can see JLaw as "Hunger Games" heroine Katniss in "Catching Fire," which opens on November 22.

Pfizer wants its 92,000 employees to switch from BlackBerry to the Apple iPhone or Android

The world's largest producer of drugs has written a prescription to its employees, and it might have read "An Apple (or Android) a day keeps the BlackBerry away." Actually, Pfizer sent out a memo to its large work force of roughly 92,000, telling those that are using a BlackBerry handset to switch to an Apple iPhone or Android model whenever they have the opportunity to upgrade with their carrier.

Besides Pfizer, the U.S. Department of Defense has developed a plan that they will implement if BlackBerry goes the way of Coleco (Google it). Like the Defense Department,  Pfizer is concerned with BlackBerry's "volatile state" according to the memo. The Canadian based OEM had hoped that the BlackBerry Z10, with its all touch interface, would staunch the bleeding as many corporations and government agencies moved away from the handset that was once a must-have business tool that every businessman worth his pinstripes owned. But instead, BlackBerry had to write off nearly $1 billion worth of the device that was attracting dust, sitting in the warehouse since launching earlier this year.

With it's largest stockholder unable to attract financing for a $9 a share buyout of BlackBerry, the company received $1 billion in financing instead and  also replaced its CEO. These actions leave the company looking a little unstable. And that worries big corporations and government agencies that require dependable communications. To that end, BlackBerry's new CEO John Chen recently tried to calm its customers by saying that BlackBerry is here for the long-haul.

Is This Miley Cyrus, Or Uma Thurman In 'Pulp Fiction'? (PHOTO)

Miley Cyrus has straight morphed into Uma Thurman from 'Pulp Fiction'!
We know Miley Cyrus totally slayed Halloween this year with her DEAD-ON Lil' Kim costume, but per the above photo of Miley rocking a blonde bob/FULL ON channeling Uma Thurman in "Pulp Fiction," it looks like she's already got next year's costume on lock! Like, dead ringer for Uma! BOOM. Bye! Miley Cyrus has won Halloween again, and this time one ENTIRE year early. (Even though she's, ya know, blonde. #Whatever #Technicalities.)

heck out more photos of  a wig-wearing Miley after the jump!

Miley must've had a bit of spare time in between performing at the 2013 MTV EMA and covering Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness," because the "Wrecking Ball" singer and her makeup artist, Denika Bedrossian, spent a recent afternoon just bein' bored and tryin' on wigs. Throw in some baked ziti and a trip to Barneys, and Miley's sounds like the best afternoon we've never had. (Note to self: Play hooky more often.)

Sharing her afternoon activity on Twitter, Miley captioned: "Bored playing with wigzzz." Like we were saying... best afternoon we've never had.

Now, really, where the eff is noted wig enthusiast Nicki Minaj at times like these?! Or Lady Gaga?? Per our calculations, two wig aficionados make a wig party, and three wig aficionados make a total WIG RAGER! SRY, WE'RE WIGGING OUT. (AHHHH STOP SAYING "WIG.")

4 Creepy, Eerie + Demented Things We Want To See In Rihanna's 'What Now' Video

Watch Rihanna's "What Now" behind-the-scenes making-of video. With 24 hours to go until Rihanna drops her "What Now" clip on Friday, our minds are racing with the possibilities of what we might see. Based on this behind-the-scenes video that she just Ri-leased, here's what we've gathered: 1.) It won't be a traditional narrative video. 2.) It won't be all "soft and pretty," but rather "a little demented." 3.) RIHANNA IS PRETTY.

But when have we ever let a limited amount of known information stand in our way before? Let's all unleash our bubbliest imagination brew, pour it up, pour it up, watch it all fall out, and let's imagine the amazingly ooky, "red carpet goth" visuals that "The Monster" singer's gonna bring to the table tomorrow.

1.) Badgalriri vs. Goodgalriri

On the Thailand warehouse set, Rihanna's stylist, Mel Ottenberg, hinted that the songstress' choreography will be channeling themes of demonic possession: "She's doing sort of, uh, exorcism-type dances." Since the looks alternate between #AllBlackEverything and #AllWhiteEverything, do you think there'll be some sort of Ri vs. Ri good and evil showdown?

2.) Light as a feather, stiff as a board

Speaking of haute goth lewks and ish that's "a little demented," can you even PICTURE how amazingly bone-chilling "What Now" would be if it includes a few visual references to "The Craft"?? Light as a feather, stiff as a board, light as a feather, stiff as a board!
Watch Rihanna's "What Now (Behind The Scenes)" video.

3.) Witchy cameos

Ummm, hello?? How can the "Stay" singer go all throwback goth-inspired and NOT take her BFF, Ms. Katy Perry, along for the ride? (Katy's love of "The Craft" is well documented, FWIW.) Did you see the "Unconditionally" singer perform "Dark Horse" at the iHeartRadio Music Festival? Or what about what Katy wore to the 2013 MTV EMA?? These two were, like, MADE to smoke cloves and complain about conformists underneath the bleachers in 1996.

4.) Twerking on blood

Remember how in the behind-the-scenes video for "Pour It Up," Rihanna claimed that "[her] b****** twerk on water"? Well, if demented is what she's after, how about she gets her backup dancers to twerk on BLOOD? Wait, too far? Too far. We hear it now. SORRY.

Chris Brown Out Of Rehab, What's Next?

Chris Brown
Chris Brown checked out on Thursday in order to begin his latest round of community service commitments.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Brown, who entered the rehab in late October to reportedly deal with anger-management
issues following an arrest on suspicion of assault in Washington, D.C., will complete his treatment on an outpatient basis.

The singer spent 16 days in the Malibu facility and is now working to whittle down the 1,000 hours of service he was ordered to complete in August, after prosecutors alleged he did not properly report the hours he'd originally been sentenced to in connection with his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Brown, 24, has until August 25 to put in the 125 days of work in and around the Los Angeles area. A spokesperson told US magazine, "Chris is continuing his rehab program as an outpatient and is also completing his community service in the Los Angeles area. He appreciates all of your encouragement and support."

The trip to rehab was voluntary, and, according to Brown's reps, it was to deal with personal issues. "His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior," read a statement
at the time. "Enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point." Shortly after he enrolled, TMZ reported that Brown might spend up to three months in the facility.

The inpatient program began one day after Brown was released from a Washington jail following his arrest on misdemeanor assault
charges in connection with an early-morning incident outside a D.C. hotel in which he was accused of punching a man in the face.

'X Factor' Recap: Selena Gomez Sizzles With 'Slow Down' After Surprising Send-Off

Selena Gomez performs on "The X Factor"
"The X Factor" opened with a shocker on Thursday night's results episode, and we're not talking about the cast's tribute to Lou Reed or Selena Gomez's performance. Simon Cowell's teenage girl group Sweet Suspense, who were seemingly in no danger of going home coming off of Wednesday's performance episode, were swiftly sent packing, leaving the group's Millie Thrasher to openly mouth "wow" while a gob smacked Simon Cowell looked like someone had just robbed millions from his bank account.
Selena Gomez Performs 'Slow Down' on 'X Factor'
Thrasher quickly composed herself when asked to comment on the group's surprise ouster. "I think we're all just so grateful to be here," she said diplomatically, thanking the judges for putting the solo contestants together into a group. Cowell, however, didn't hide his feelings. "I can't believe it," he said, still looking stunned. "Look girls, it was not your fault, I don't know what happened here. Because, without being rude, there were worse people than you last night."

Sweet Suspense's performance of Tony Basil's cheerleader anthem "Mickey" the night prior was full of pep, but Demi Lovato was critical of the song, saying the trio's stage presence lacked energy and that they were too focused on their choreography. Cowell's response to Lovato's criticisms? "Oh, shut up," he said, saying the girls "looked and sounded like a real group."

But there were no saves to be had and no rabbits to be pulled out of hats, and Sweet Suspense headed for the doors. Their final performance was part of the group tribute to Reed, where the 12 finalists sang a misguided-at-best rendition of "Perfect Day."

Selena Gomez's pre-taped performance of "Slow Down" aired on Thursday night. In a black, fringed leotard, the Stars Dance singer strutted onstage to belt out the song. Selena, who is currently on tour, brought some of her dancers with her to "X Factor," and the segment highlighted more dancing than singing.

Sweet Suspense's exit wasn't the only surprise of the night. The night's second elimination came down to a battle between Khaya Cohen and Rachel Potter, two performers who had good-to-great nights on Wednesday.

Cohen's version of Madonna's "Borderline" was dubbed "brilliant" by Paulina Rubio and was called her "best performance ever" by Cowell. Potter's wind machine-assisted take on Heart's "Alone," meanwhile, was slightly critiqued by Cowell, who said she was "screaming" the song's glory note, though the other judges said she did well on the song. Voters were less enthusiastic, throwing her to battle for her life in the competition against Cohen.

Cohen went very literal with her survival song, pouring her heart into Joe Cocker's "Don't Give Up On Me." Turns out it was a song she's been wanting to sing. "I mean it sucks being in the bottom two," she told host Mario Lopez, "but I'm really happy I got to perform it." After being compared to a cross between Shania Twain and Martina McBride by Lovato the night before, Potter went ahead and did Twain's "From This Moment On."

But it wasn't enough: Cowell, Rubio and Lovato all elected to keep Cohen in the competition, sending Potter to join Sweet Suspense on "X Factor's" road to ruin. Cowell was so over the show he was already playing with a lighter in his hand as he made his final decision. At least he's still got Fifth Harmony, the second season "X Factor" finalists who performed "Me and My Girls" on the show.

A tip for the dwindling number of "X Factor" watchers: Tack on a few extra minutes of overrun while taping the results show, as the judges' hemming and hawing caused Thursday's show to runneth over, and not all viewers watching on delay were able to see the final results. When Lopez says he needs an answer "now," that really means now, guys.

Apple and Samsung together account for... 109% of industry profits

Apple and Samsung together account for... 109% of industry profits
We may be sounding like a broken record, but there's no arguing with hard data: the mobile industry is, for all intents and purposes, a two-horse race. According to data from Canaccord Genuity, shared by Apple Insider, the Apple and Samsung duo accounts for a whopping 109% of the industry profits. This rather confusing number is by virtue of the losses that the rest of the industry incurred.

Canaccord Genuity estimates that Apple took 56% of the operating profits for Q3 2013 – a jump from 53% from the quarter before. Sammy's share also saw an increase from 49% in Q2 to 53% of industry profits for this last quarter, trailing ever so slightly behind the Cupertino-based company.
In a stark contrast, the rest of the industry bled money, with BlackBerry being the biggest loser with negative 4% of profits, followed by Motorola and it's negative 3% 'share'. The rest – Nokia, LG and HTC – all took an equally-sized hit of -1% of profits. In fact, only Sony managed to break-even, though as you can see at its previous results, the company has been incredibly stagnant – not losing money, but barely ever making any.
Anyhow, as you delve into the numbers below, keep in mind that these figures are not 100% representative, “as some Android OEMs include tablet sales in reported smart device sales and profits,” according to T. Michale Walkley with Canaccord Genuity. In other words, according to the analyst, the actual share of Apple is even higher, which is actually not at all that surprising – Cupretino does have a ridiculous tower of cash. It's also important to note that shares of Chinese manufacturers, such as ZTE, Huawei and CoolPad, have not been accounted for. This means that Apple's and Samsung's share of the profits pie is lower than reported, but still quite indicative.
