Justin Bieber: From Musical Artist to… Graffiti Artist?

Justin Bieber (Instagram)
Justin Bieber Parties at Strip Club and Drinks! PHOTOS!Justin Bieber revealed his new pastime to fans early Thursday morning, posting a series of photos to Instagram in which he's exercising his graffiti skills.

"I found a new hobby," the 19-year-old singer wrote in one pic, which is of a hand — presumably his own — covered with spray paint.

He also posted shots of his work — the largest being some type of a tribute to his deceased hamster. No, we're not kidding. With his back to the camera and paint cans at his feet, he's seen crafting a bizarre Kermit the Frog wannabe character that has "Thug life" written on it and is giving the middle finger. Above the design are the words "RIP PAC," an apparent reference to the furry critter which once served as the mascot of his Believe Tour before he randomly gave it to a fan. The hamster died in March.

Another photo shows Bieber writing the words "street art" on a wall. And the last pic shows tagging all over a wall but it's hard to decipher any clear message.

Critics, at least those on Instagram, haven't been kind.

If the Biebs is looking for positive feedback for his "hobby," which is illegal unless he's doing it on his own private property (and that didn't work very well for Chris Brown), he won't find it on Instagram. The reaction from commenters is largely negative. Follower sydneyy_smilee simply wrote, "Ew," but that was one of the more polite posts. Bojofyr wrote, "F--k! this is the worst s--t I've ever seen." And follower Ovaa posted, "Just stop. Please just f--king stop painting...seriously. s--t's wack."

With Banksy making headlines for his "residency on the streets of New York" for the month of October, it seems Bieber could be trying to channel the famed graffiti artist — though the elusive Brit's work is known for its political messages and it fetches millions. He's not exactly big on tributes to dead hamsters either.

This isn't the first time Bieber has shared his drawing skills. He actually gave someone a tattoo that he created. In March, photos surfaced of the 19-year-old permanently inking Bang Bang at the famed tattoo artist's New York City parlor. The star's design was of a muscular mouse — with six-pack abs, of course. Next to it, he wrote the word Swaggy, which is apparently the name of his signature cartoon character.

Let's hope he keeps his day job, shall we?

The last word on...the Apple iPad Air

AFP Photo/Glenn Chapman
Apple unveiled its latest iPads and all their shiny, new features last week. And since the iPad Air is scheduled to hit stores Friday, reviews of Apple's new tablet have begun to surface.

With so many opinions and perspectives on this device spread out all across different sites on the web, we've compiled the best of the best all in one article right here on Yahoo Tech. This is your one-stop shop for iPad Air reviews.

We call it THE LAST WORD.

"Surprise: the iPad Air is the best iPad we've reviewed. In addition, though, it's also the most comfortable 10-inch tablet we've ever tested. Not every manufacturer can produce a thin and light device without also making it feel cheap or flimsy, but Apple nailed it. Factor in a sizable boost in performance and battery life, and the Air is even more compelling. The last two iPads served up relatively few improvements, but the Air provides people with more of a reason to upgrade or even buy a tablet for the first time."

generations of iPad thanks to their extreme familiarity, it’s time to get yourself dialed back in. The iPad Air is worth getting excited about. Though it brings no new functionality to the table, and we can’t help being disappointed about the lack of Touch ID, the performance increase and solid battery life show that progress is still being made on the inside. It’s the new exterior design, however, that really impresses. The iPad Air is thinner than any tablet this size deserves to be, and lighter, too. The old iPad always felt surprisingly hefty. This one, compellingly lithe."

I had all but written off the bigger iPad. It was too bulky and just no where near as portable as the iPad mini. Once the latter gets a Retina Display and equal hardware across the board, why would anyone consider the bigger model?

The iPad Air changed my perspective on all of that. It really does modernize the big iPad. While I suspect there are still going to be a lot of users who prefer the smaller form factor of the iPad mini with Retina Display, I do feel like there are those users who will continue to appreciate all of the benefits that go along with having a larger display. Text is easier to read, particularly on desktop versions of websites. Photos and videos are larger and thus more engaging as well. In the past there was this complex matrix of tradeoffs that you had to make between iPad and iPad mini. This generation, Apple does away with all of that."

"The iPad Air is a huge improvement  over the iPad 4th-gen, or the iPad 2, pictured in the gallery. Its form factor is the best currently available for a 10-inch tablet, and it provides a great blend of portability and usability that leans towards the media device end of the spectrum.

When Apple introduced the iPad mini, I feel in love and felt that I’d never be swayed back to the other side. The iPad Air makes the argument anew that there’s still room for big tablets in people’s lives, and it might just help usher in an era of computing where households own more than one kind of iPad, and PCs are harder and harder to find."

"Is the Apple iPad Air a major innovation in tablets? No. Heck, it doesn’t even have the cool, or oddball, Mayday 24/7 video-chat customer service found in the new Amazon Kindle Fire HDX devices. Time will tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. For me, though, the question is not which tablet offers the most whiz-bang features. It’s which one serves as the ultimate consumer device.

Yes, I know, tablets live and survive in the workplace. iPads started showing up in my meetings almost as soon as they were introduced more than three years ago. The iPad Air is up for the corporate challenge, and is, obviously, lighter than any Ultrabook (so it's easy to carry around the office). That said, it’s also an excellent content-consumption, entertainment and connectivity device. So, too, is the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX. I like that tablet quite a bit, though I still think the iPad Air has the design edge over it and all other tablets on the market.

Yes, it’s true, the iPad Air is essentially a larger iPad Mini Retina. For some, that’s a disappointment. For me, the new iPad Air is close to everything a consumer tablet should be: Light, fast, fun, beautiful and a little bit like the future."

"No longer alone in the marketplace, no longer the only right choice, no breakthrough new features. But it’s smaller, lighter, and faster than ever, with a much bigger catalog of apps—and much better ones—than the competition. If you want a big tablet, this is the one that will make you happiest.

Put another way, there really is something in the Air."

Air is the no-compromise tablet. Beautiful display, crisp design, premium build quality: it’s the gold-standard by which tablets are judged, and rightly so. If Apple’s full-sized slates had fallen into the shadow of their mini brethren over the past twelve months, the iPad Air brings the larger tablet right back into the spotlight.

...For some, the more compact iPad mini with Retina display will be the more portable iOS tablet of preference. For others, the wider range of Android tablets, often more affordable will hold greater appeal. Yet, for its combination of connectivity, longevity, power, app selection, and relentlessly pared-back design, the iPad Air ticks the boxes that make it the tablet for the everyman."

"I’ve been testing the iPad Air for about a week and found it a pleasure to use. This new iPad isn’t a radical rethinking of what a tablet can be, but it’s a major improvement on a successful product. It is the best tablet I’ve ever reviewed.

That isn’t just because of its slimmer, lighter design, but because Apple boasts 475,000 apps optimized for tablet use — far more than any other tablet platform. (The iPad also can run all of the million or so apps available for the iPhone.) By contrast, the vast majority of apps available for rival Android tablets are just stretched versions of phone apps.

...Bottom line: If you can afford it, the new iPad Air is the tablet I recommend, hands down."

"Apple has done it again: the iPad Air is a tablet better than the last iPad. Simply put the iPad Air is the best iPad the company has ever made. It's light, it's thin, it's fast, it's amazing.

For die-hard Apple fans we can see how you would be disappointed in terms of wow factor, there is no standout feature here that you will want to show your friends the moment they walk through the door in the same way you can with the iPhone 5S and Touch ID, however this is Apple creating the ultimate experience rather than focusing on specs for specs' sake.

...But make no mistake: if you buy the iPad Air you'll be very happy. Apple has created an experience that far outweighs specs on a spec sheet and that will be hard for the competition to match. That in itself makes it the best tablet on the market in terms of performance, apps, and desirability, until the iPad mini with Retina display comes along, and then the fight over which iPad to get really starts."The Verge

Google Nexus 5 vs Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy Nexus: specs comparison

At last, the seemingly endless flurry of leaks and speculations has come to a halt as the Google Nexus 5 is finally official! And the smartphone is not looking bad at all now that we have its hardware and software specs confirmed by LG and Google themselves. As we expected, there's some top-notch hardware under the hood of the device, including a quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC clocked at 2.26GHz. That 5-inch, 1080p screen doesn't look shabby either.

Clearly, the Google Nexus 5 is a worthy rival to some of the top Android smartphones out there, especially given its relatively low off-contract cost. At the same time, it is a few steps ahead of the previous Nexus iterations as it has evolved from a hardware perspective. Sure, specs aren't everything that matters in a smartphone, but with Android devices in particular, they can often provide us with a good indication as to how a given device will perform.

Having that in mind, here's the specifications list of the Google Nexus 5, next to the specs for the Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Anyone thinking of upgrading from an older Nexus handset? Let us know in the comments below!

This security machine might replace your local TSA agent

The Palo Alto-based startup Qylur has come up with a device it claims will replace some of the humans who check for threats at airports.

The Qylatron has been tested at Liberty State Park, an airport in Rio de Janeiro and a stadium in the U.S. The first of the screening machines will be deployed early next year. The company has not yet announced its commercial customers.

In a statement, Qylur explains that the machine "scans guest IDs and screens bags five times faster, detects multiple security threats, reduces security costs with up to 50% less staffing, and improves the guest experience."

(Photo: Courtesy of Qylur) It's sort of like taking CVS self-checkout to the next level. The way it works, according to Bloomberg Businessweek: "A person puts a bag into one side of the machine, scans a ticket or a boarding pass, and closes the door. The machine then scans the contents and compares their characteristics to those of every item it has ever scanned."

To retrieve your bag, you let the machine scan the ticket or boarding pass again. The more it scans, the more it learns. Yes, Bloomberg Businessweek asserts, the machine gets smarter.

The system has some nice side benefits as well. There's no need to take your laptop out of its case. And you don't have to chug your bottle of water before going through security. Just stuff everything in the machine's hexagon-shaped compartments, which look to be the size of an animal-carrying case, and let it work.

If a threat, like a firearm, is detected, the compartment locks until a security agent takes action.

“I think it’s worthy of consideration of the TSA,” said an industry security representative, who did not want to be named because he had no direct experience with the technology.

Founder and CEO Lisa Dolev, whose background is in security and defense technology, was inspired to improve the safety of large crowds, or soft targets, as she calls them, after the 2004 Madrid train bombings.

"You can't protect soft targets," Dolev told Yahoo Travel over the phone. “Nothing was really effective for the private venues. And that was the inspiration,” she added.

She noted that Qylatrons may make more sense for places that have no mechanized system setup, like stadiums or train stations. But even then, the machines won't completely replace the personal touch.

"We can't hand everything over to a computer yet," said Dolev, noting that the machines work in tandem with a person stationed both at the front and at the back of the machine. Humans are "still good at a lot of things," she added.

Tests suggest baby born with HIV may be cured

First child 'functionally cured' of HIV remains in remission, scientists announce
Doctors now have convincing evidence that they put HIV into remission, hopefully for good, in a Mississippi baby born with the AIDS virus — a medical first that is prompting a new look at how hard and fast such cases should be treated.

The case was reported earlier this year but some doctors were skeptical that the baby was really infected rather than testing positive because of exposure to virus in the mom's blood.

The new report, published online Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine, makes clear that the girl, now 3, was infected in the womb. She was treated unusually aggressively and shows no active infection despite stopping AIDS medicines 18 months ago.

Doctors won't call it a cure because they don't know what proof or how much time is needed to declare someone free of HIV infection, long feared to be permanent.

"We want to be very cautious here. We're calling it remission because we'd like to observe the child for a longer time and be absolutely sure there's no rebound," said Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, a University of Massachusetts AIDS expert involved in the baby's care.

The government's top AIDS scientist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, agreed.

"At minimum, the baby is in a clear remission. It is possible that the baby has actually been cured. We don't have a definition for cure as we do for certain cancers, where after five years or so you can be relatively certain the person is not going to go and relapse," he said. A scientist at his institute did sophisticated tests that showed no active virus in the child.

California police 'kill boy carrying pellet gun'

A BB gun modeled on an assault rifle at a gun buyback at Sayre Woods Bible Church on September 27, 2013 in Old Bridge, New JerseyWashington (AFP) - Californian police have shot dead a 13-year-old boy who was carrying a pellet gun that looked like an assault rifle, police and media reports said.

The child, identified as Andy Lopez and described in media reports as popular in his school, was walking down a street on Tuesday when sheriff's deputies saw him carrying what appeared to be a rifle.

They ordered him to drop it and "and at some point immediately thereafter, the deputies fired several rounds from their handguns at the subject striking him several times," according to a statement from the Sonoma county sheriff's office.

"Once the scene was secured deputies learned that the rifle was a replica of an assault weapon."

Local media reported the victim was 13-years-old. Police did not confirm this but hinted at his youth in a statement of condolence.

"As a father of two boys about this age, I can't begin to imagine the grief this family is going through," said the statement from Sonoma County Sheriff Steve Freitas.

The shooting Tuesday has shocked the local community in the city of Santa Rosa, about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of San Francisco.

The latest chapter in the epidemic of gun violence in the United States came a day after a 12-year-old boy in Nevada opened fire at his school, killing a teacher, wounding two students and ultimately killed himself.

The best phablets and big-screen phones money can buy in 2013

The best phablets and big-screen phones money can buy in 2013
2013 can with every certainty be called The Year of the Phablet, no matter if you like the term or not. It marks the first year when Samsung's Note 3 family representative met some serious competition from the other phone makers, who decided to introduce their take on those 5.5"+ devices that people seem to be jonesing about lately.

Sony one-upped everybody with the 6.3" waterproof Xperia Z Ultra, making it a member of the sub-7mm club of thickness, HTC also chipped it with the One max and its innovative fingerprint scanner on the back, while Nokia entered the race in a heartwarming manner with its pivotal for Windows Phone Lumia 1520 and the affordable 1320.
There are a lot of entrants in between also, so let's recap what are some of the best phablets money can buy at the moment, before something even wilder has been spotted just around the corner (nudge, wink, LG G Flex).

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G2

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G2Introduction:
So let's say that you're interested in getting a new high-end smartphone, and having a huge display is one of your top priorities. Well, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is among the handsets matching that description – it is fast, loaded to the brim with neat features, and equipped with a gorgeous 5.7-inch touchscreen. However, as in most cases, there's a number of alternatives to consider – high-end alternatives that will fit in your pockets much more easily than the Note 3, yet will provide you with a screen that is nearly as spacious. One of them is the LG G2, packing a 5.2-inch display and the hardware muscle needed to give Samsung's phablet some heated competition. Without a doubt, choosing a favorite between these two smartphones is no easy task, so let's dive into it and see what they have to win our hearts with.

Design:
It is hard to say which one of these two smartphones looks better, primarily because neither of them has much to sparkle with. Don't get us wrong – they definitely can't be described as bad-looking, but putting at least a little more effort into improving their appearance wouldn't have hurt anyone.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G2Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G2

The plastic-made Samsung Galaxy Note 3, with its conservative shape and leather-like plastic back plate, looks and feels a bit more like a device built with professionals in mind. Its textured surface has a very low tendency to slip out of your palm, and that's quite a big deal since handling this jumbo-sized handset can be challenging. At the same time, no fingerprints or pocket lint get stuck to the Note 3's back, so it looks nice and spotless pretty much all of the time.

The LG G2 looks and feels quite okay and has a better chance at appealing to the younger crowd with its curvy physique. But again, its design can't make any jaws drop as we see nothing extraordinary about its construction or build quality. It sports a body made of glossy plastic treated to a fine, discrete pattern seen on the handset's back plate. Smudgy traces build up on its surface rather quickly, but thankfully, they are easy to get rid of with a quick wipe.

What does make the LG G2 stand out, however, is its size. For a smartphone packing a huge, 5.2-inch touchscreen, it feels surprisingly compact and it would definitely fit easier in your pocket than the Galaxy Note 3. Furthermore, while handling Samsung's phablet with a single hand is a challenge, the LG G2 is a lot more suitable for single-handed use.

One of the tricks that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has tucked up its sleeve is the S Pen it comes bundled with. Resting in its dedicated slot, that is a pressure-sensitive digital stylus and a perk every Galaxy Note device offers. The accessory is used much like a real pen, but instead of paper, a virtual canvas is used for writing on. Entering text by hand, drawing, taking down notes, and navigating through the phablet's interface are all among the main uses for the S Pen. Naturally, there's a number of S Pen optimized apps and features built into the UI, and you can learn more about them in our Galaxy Note 3 review.

Lifting the Note 3's back cover reveals its user-replaceable 3200mAh battery, as well as its slots for the Micro SIM and microSD cards. Alas, the LG G2 has a non-removable back cover so its 3000mah battery is off limits. No microSD card slot is present on the G2, so you'll have to rely solely on its built-in storage.

LG has placed the G2's power and volume keys on the back for a couple of reasons. Firstly, that has allowed for the company's engineers to make the phone more narrow (read: easier to hold), and secondly, this unorthodox solution is meant to make these buttons easier to access. Well, we've been using the LG G2 for a while now, and while we're fine with having the power and volume keys placed where they are, we don't think that their placement makes them easier to operate.

Buttons on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are arranged in a typical for the company fashion, with a large physical home key below the screen accompanied by a pair of capacitive buttons for the back and menu functions. The power and volume keys are positioned on the right and left sides respectively and are easy to reach despite the handset's size.

Lorde's Looking To 'Pour It Up' With Rihanna

With 'Royals' still at #1, Lorde wants to work with Rihanna, hang with Dr. Luke.

Lorde and Rihanna

Lorde is quickly learning that, if you can score a #1 hit in the U.S., the world is your oyster.

Yes, as "Royals" begins its third week atop Billboard's Hot 100 chart, the 16-year-old sensation is beginning to reap the benefits of Stateside success ... like rubbing elbows with members of the pop elite.

Lorde Answers Your Twitter Questions

"I've heard from lots of people — almost too many to mention! But Dr. Luke was particularly impressive," she says in a new interview with Clash magazine. "It's like 'You're Dr. Luke, You're like Rambo. He's pop royalty. I imagine him living in some ice palace with Nordic maidens and wind chimes. He's cool. I find what he does so fascinating."

Lorde didn't say if she plans on actually working with the Good Doctor any time soon, though she did tell the magazine that, these days, she's becoming increasingly interested in writing for other artists, and revealed her wish list of potential collaborators. And though she still jokingly refers to herself as "a disgusting person," she's definitely looking to clean herself up, and cash in on some of her new-found clout.

"I haven't written for other artists yet, but I definitely want to," she said. "Obviously, lyrics are a huge part of my music, and they're so personal to me, so ... it'll be such a challenge to step out of my body. I can't wait. Rihanna would be fun to write for because she's done everything. And I'd love to write for — or with — Ellie Goulding, actually."

Verizon cuts prices on new Droids: Droid MAXX down to $199, Ultra to $99 and Mini to $49

Verizon cuts prices on new Droids: Droid MAXX down to $199, Ultra to $99 and Mini to $49Motorola's new Droid phones on Verizon have received warm reception as they support all the neat features of the Moto X like always-on voice command listener, and now you can get them for a much lower price.

The Verizon Motorola Droid MAXX, a handset that sports a whopping 3500mAh battery, one of the largest ever put on a phone, now costs $199 on a two-year contract. This is a $100 price cut from its original $299 price.

The Droid Ultra is an extremely thin and sleek device featuring identical hardware, but a less capable battery. It is also receiving a $100 price cut so you can get it for $99.99 with a 2-year pact.

Finally, even the smallest of the bunch, the Droid Mini gets discounted by $50 to $49.99.

Out of this trio, we clearly like the Droid MAXX best. It's a great device and its battery is really appreciated. You can take advantage of the lower prices at Verizon stores.

We have to defend our style of play, values

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on Thursday that his club will not abandon their principles despite beginning to make their presence felt in the transfer market.

Buoyed by the club-record £42.4 million ($66 million, 50 million euros) purchase of Mesut Ozil, Arsenal won five of their first seven Premier League games and currently lead the table on goal difference from Liverpool.

Years of shrewd financial management, including the construction of the 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium, have left Arsenal in a strong economic position, but Wenger says they will not get carried away.

“We have huge ambition to win the league this season,” he told shareholders at the club’s annual general meeting. “We were restricted financially and had to be strict, but we have come out of that.

“However, we have to defend our style of play and values. That comes from developing our own players with youth policy and that should be the core of our club.

“The future of Arsenal will rely on the quality of work we do inside, to scout and develop. We are respected all over the world for our values; we are not artificial.

“We will also look to buy proven quality. We did not need to scout to buy Ozil; it was just money. I am pleased we have shown you we are not afraid to spend.”

Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke said that the club could only move forward if Wenger’s players enjoyed sustained success on the pitch.

“We are pleased with the progress of the club; most importantly, progress on the pitch,” he said.

“None of us up here (on the board), fans, players, or Arsene are happy until we have won trophies. We have said that over again and are committed to that.

“It is also important for the club to be successful commercially, and we are pleased with that. We have come a long way, with the debt being paid down, commercial revenues are increasing.

“We have more (deals) coming and are confident. However, nothing works unless we have success on the pitch.”

New club chairman Chips Keswick opened the AGM by paying tribute to his predecessor, Peter Hill-Wood, who retired from the role earlier this year due to health problems.

Arsenal have not won a trophy since 2005, but Wenger believes that their long silverware drought could be coming to an end.

“We are top (of the table), in a very strong position, but at the end of November will give a much clearer indication of where everyone lies,” he said.

“I am confident that at the end of May, we will all be happy.”

Kim Kardashian Puts 'No Filter' On Bodacious, Post-Baby Body: See The Pic!

The reality starlet gave fans an all-access look four months after giving birth.

Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian is back and hotter than ever before! The reality starlet showed off her curvaceous post-baby body on Instagram, four months after giving birth to her daughter, North West.

The "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star posed in a barely-there white swimsuit that left very little to the imagination, including her very famous derriere. Her only comment about the sexy selfie was "#NoFilter." While Kim has been out and about since having her daughter, even hitting up Paris Fashion Week with boyfriend Kanye West, this is the most revealing look at her post-baby body.

For fans wondering how the TV star bounced back after giving birth back in June to her baby girl, she revealed all on Twitter over the weekend, writing, "I've actually been doing the Atkins diet & luv it."

The hot reveal comes just days before she's slated to celebrate her big birthday in Las Vegas. She'll be celebrating the big 3-3 at the Venetian in Sin City on October 25.

Report says children and power users should be limited to 40 minutes of cell phone use daily

Report says children and power users should be limited to 40 minutes of cell phone use daily
Every once in a while, the issue of radiation comes forward, spreading doomsday fears about cell phone usage. The latest report comes from France's safety watchdog group, which says that children and heavy users should limit their daily cell phone use. This warning comes despite the group's conclusion that cell phones produce "no proven effect" on health.

According to The National Agency for Health, Food and Environmental Safety in France, children and heavy users should limit their exposure on cell phones to just 40 minutes a day. The recommendation was made by a panel of 16 experts who studied 300 scientific studies that have been released since 2009. Some of the studies have linked long term cell phone use with the development of brain cancer.

A commerce manager who spend 6 hours a day on a cell phone for 12 years as part of his job, was awarded compensation by an Italian Court for a brain tumor that the court ruled had come on as a result of his cell phone use. The French agency also blamed cell phone radiation for fertility issues, cognitive problems, and issues with sleep. Despite all of this information, The National Agency for Health, Food and Environmental Safety was forced to admit that "the agency's experts were unable to establish any causal link between the biological effects described in cell models, animals or humans, and any possible resulting health effects."

Lumia 1020 beats the iPhone 5s and Galaxy S4 by a mile in our blind camera comparison
And so it is time for us to reveal the smartphones that took part in the blind camera comparison that we published last week. The idea was, basically, to come up with a camera contest that factors out all possible bias one might have towards a certain brand, model or OS. By the looks of it, we've succeeded in removing bias from the equation as no one ever knew which model hid behind which phone number, and so everyone voted for the images they think are better, rather than for their favorite phone.

It's quite obvious for everyone who followed the development of the voting phase that this turned out to be a rather one-sided contest. 'Phone 5' ended up so far ahead of the others, that it made some people think this isn't exactly a phone like all the others. And to an extent, they were right, as 'Phone 5' was the Nokia Lumia 1020. Packing that beefy 41 MP PureView camera,  the Lumia 1020 is really a true heavyweight smartphone that doesn't have the sexiness of those iOS and Android powerhouses, but makes up for it by featuring this amazing camera, which happens to be way better than what the best camera phones of those other ecosystems can offer. And so, with the whopping 62% of all votes, the Lumia 1020 has left the Galaxy S4 (2nd, with 20% of the votes) and the iPhone 5s (3rd, with 11% of the votes) far, far behind. The other three smartphones that took part in the competition were left with the laughable 2.6% for the LG G2, 1.5% for the iPhone 5c, and 1.3% for the HTC One.

When you think about it, the Nokia Lumia 1020 was obliged to win this one. After all, it's so thick and bulky and uninviting, only because of the camera it packs. Well, Windows Phone itself also has a hand in it being so uninviting, but that's a different story. Anyway, now that we've revealed the cameraphones, are you surprised by the results?

Apple iPhone 6 might arrive with a bigger, 4.8" display

Apple iPhone 6 might arrive with a bigger, 4.8" displayThe time for an iPhone with a larger display is finally coming. The Apple iPhone 6 will be the first iPhone to get a larger, 4.8-inch screen, according to Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek. It’s not just Misek, though - we have seen reports from the Wall Street Journal and KGI Securities mentioning an iPhone with a larger screen being in the works.

This is still nothing but a rumor, but there seems to be more and more evidence that Apple is indeed testing a larger device. The iPhone 6 also seems like a right fit for a new design as it should come next year, two years after the last big redesign in the iPhone series with the iPhone 5.

“Despite still seeing risk to CQ4 and FY13 revs, we now believe better [gross margins] will allow Apple to skate by until iPhone 6 launches with its 4.8″ screen,” Misek wrote in a note. ”We est ~50% of smartphone shipments have >4″ screens and that iPhone 6 will catalyze a large upgrade cycle. The stock is attractive based on the attitude change, FY15 revs >+15%, and valuation.”

Misek previously issues a Hold rating on Apple stock, and is now once again bullish, giving Apple shares a Buy rating and raising his target for the stock to $600.

Nadal rises to world no.1, Federer drops

SHANGHAI (AFP) – Rafael Nadal was confirmed as the new world number one in the latest ATP tennis rankings published on Monday, pushing Novak Djokovic to second as Roger Federer drops to seventh.

Nadal has 11,160 points, just 40 ahead of Djokovic, who lost his grip on the top spot despite defeating the Mallorcan to win the China Open on Sunday.

Britain’s Andy Murray, currently recuperating from back surgery, is third in the revised rankings but Swiss great Federer sinks one place from sixth to seventh.

Spain’s David Ferrer remains at number four, just 185 points off Murray’s tally, while Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro moves up two places to fifth after winning the Japan Open.

Nadal has previously had two stints at the summit of men’s tennis. He first became number one in August 2008 and stayed there for 46 weeks, regaining top spot in June 2010 and adding 56 weeks to his tally.

We are very ready for this match – Ethiopian Teshome

In matching blue jerseys and red shorts, Ethiopia’s footballers confidently criss-cross their home pitch, launching the ball back and forth.

The players press on under the blistering morning sun for over two hours. At this crucial stage in the 2014 World Cup Africa zone qualifiers, the team knows that every minute of training counts.

“We have tried to prepare them physically as well as mentally in the first week and now we are doing our tactical work and we will continue in the coming few days to combine the two,” said Ethiopian ‘Waliya Antelopes’ coach Sewnet Bishaw, as his team waged a practice match behind him.

Ethiopia are preparing to face Nigeria on Sunday in their toughest qualifying match yet.

Though the odds are stacked against Ethiopia — Nigeria rank 36th in the world, according to international football governing body FIFA, while Ethiopia clocks in at 93 – the ‘Waliyas’ maintain an unflinching resolve to win.

Having beaten 2010 World Cup hosts South Africa to land at the top of their group, it is the closest the Horn of Africa nation has come to reaching the finals.

Ethiopia know the next match will be far from easy. On top of their impressive global ranking, Nigeria have more international experience and boasts several players from top European leagues.

But the ‘Waliyas’ refuse to let that spook them.

Having played Nigeria last January at the Africa Cup of Nations, Ethiopia are familiar with the strength of Nigeria’s ‘Super Eagles’, who won the game 2-0 before moving on to win the lift the trophy in South Africa.

“We are ready for this match, we are very ready. We learned a lesson from the mistakes we made last time,” said midfielder Menyahil Teshome.

Coach Sewnet said despite Ethiopia’s defeat, the Nigerian squad is not a better team and the ‘Waliyas’ maintained their strength until the last 10 minutes of the game.

“If you look seriously at that match, Nigeria were not a better team than us. Up to the (end) we were performing good. But in the last 10 minutes they used their experience, so they got two penalties,” he said.

“I think we will have a better game in the coming match against Nigeria,” Sewnet said.

But he admits training has been set back by the absence of the team’s four professional players, including star striker Saladin Said, who are expected early this week.

Ethiopia — a country better known for their renowned runners than their footballers — have amazed supporters by making it this far in the qualifiers.

Menyahil said his team, regarded as underdogs among powerful African national football teams like Ghana and Ivory Coast, is bolstered by a strong sense of nationalism and a refusal to be intimidated.

“Our strength is our team spirit,” he said, sweating after training at Addis Ababa’s national stadium, which is lined with posters of the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

“We have nothing to fear. Until now, we’ve been supported by our people,” added Menyahil, who was fielded illegally in a match against Botswana, costing the team three points.

Though preventing Nigeria from scoring away goals is crucial if Ethiopia want to proceed, coach Sewnet said the team is focused on both defending and attacking, and is not prioritising one over the other.

And while he insists he is focusing on winning each match individually, instead of pressuring his team to reach Brazil, he does not scoff at the idea of making it to the World Cup.

“Why not? I don’t know Brazil, so I want to see it,” he joked.

The return match is scheduled for Calabar in south-east Nigeria on November 16 and the aggregate winners qualify for the World Cup.

'Gravity' Crushes Justin Timberlake At Box Office

Sci-Fi epic set a new October record with $55.5 million, while Timberlake's 'Runner Runner' brought in just $7.6 million.

Sandra Bullock in "Gravity"
The weight of "Gravity" was just too heavy for Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck over the weekend.

Filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron's sci-fi epic crushed the box office record for October with a $55.5 million weekend, displacing 2011's "Paranormal Activity 3" and providing career-best openings for Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the process.

Remaining at a beyond impressive 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes "Tomatometer" as the weekend concluded, "Gravity" enjoyed the combination of critical consensus and word of mouth about its impressive 3-D IMAX visuals.

Sandra Bullock On 'Gravity': Preparing Emotionally 'Wasn't Easy'

3-D ticket sales accounted for 71 percent of that $55.5 million total, with IMAX showings contributing roughly 20 percent. In addition to the heavy-duty emotional work poured into the performances (Bullock recently talked about that scene with MTV News), there are many other noteworthy facts to consider surrounding its record breaking weekend. The movie isn't a sequel, or remake or an adaptation. The female lead is 49 years old; the male lead is 52.

Bullock's previous career-best opening was just a few months ago, when the action-comedy "Heat" started with $39.1 million. Clooney's new #2 stretches all the way back to 1997's ill-fated "Batman and Robin," which kicked off with $42.8 million.

Ben Affleck will step inside the Batman suit in 2015's followup to "Man of Steel," but for now, he'll have to look forward to next year's release of "Gone Girl" (directed by David Fincher) and his own adaptation of Dennis Lehane's "Live By Night" (which Affleck co-wrote and will both direct and star in) because there isn't much to celebrate about "Runner Runner" now.

Despite the star power of Justin Timberlake and Affleck and an association with producer Leonardo DiCaprio, "Runner Runner" stumbled with one of the worst openings ever for a movie debuting on more than 3,000 screens (the #1 record for that belongs to "Hoot," which featured future Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Clark Gregg in a small role). "Runner Runner" made just $7.6 million at the domestic box office. In stark contrast with "Gravity," the gambling drama sat at just 8 percent on Rotten Tomatoes on Sunday.

With "Runner Runner" barely reaching #3, that left the #2 spot wide open for last week's champ, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2." The kid-friendly sequel made another $21.5 million for a two week total of $60.5 million. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal's "Prisoners" was #4 with $5.7 million got a three week total near $48 million. Chris Hemsworth's 1970s-set racing drama "Rush" rounded out the Top 5 with $4.4 million for a somewhat lackluster total domestic gross of $18 million.

Listen To Naya Rivera's Cory Monteith Tribute In Exclusive 'Glee' Track Here

Rivera's cover of The Band Perry's 'If I Die Young' will be featured during the tribute, airing on Thursday.

Cory Monteith & Naya Rivera in 2012
This week, "Glee" will say goodbye to Cory Monteith. During Thursday's episode, titled "The Quarterback," the cast will join together to mourn his character, Finn Hudson. And, as always, music will play a vital part in the story.

MTV News has an exclusive first listen of Naya Rivera's (Santana) cover of the mournful country ballad, "If I Die Young," originally recorded by The Band Perry. The Grammy-nominated, chart-topping song was written by the group's leading lady, Kimberly Perry. It was featured on the band's 2010 self-titled debut album and would go on to become a crossover hit for the trio of siblings.

"If I Die Young" is one of the many tracks included in Thursday's episode, the last before the show goes on hiatus. In a preview teased last week, Monteith's real-life and onscreen girlfriend, Lea Michele, covered "Make You Feel My Love," written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1997 and later covered by Adele.

The other songs featured in the episode will include "Seasons Of Love" ("Rent") performed by the full cast, "I'll Stand By You" (The Pretenders) performed by Amber Riley's Mercedes, "Fire & Rain" (James Taylor) performed by Chord Overstreet's Sam and Kevin McHale's Artie and "No Surrender" (Bruce Springsteen) performed by Mark Salling's Puck.

All the net proceeds from the sales of the tracks in the U.S. and Canada will be donated by Columbia Records, Fox, and the artists to Project Limelight Society, an organization that promotes the cultural arts for young people in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Monteith, who died on July 13 in Vancouver at the age of 31, was a native of Calgary, Canada.

Details about Finn's death on the show have not yet been confirmed. Show creator, Ryan Murphy, recently opened up about filming the episode, noting it was "incredibly difficult to work on."

"The episode is called 'The Quarterback,' and Cory really was that to that group of people and to me particularly," Murphy said. "That group of kids particularly went through the limelight and became world famous at a very difficult age, and many of them really struggled with it ... Cory obviously very much struggled with it, but never on the surface, and I think that's why everybody loved him. He was the most kind, the most generous — never a bad word for anybody."

LG, Samsung, Google, Intel, Cisco, SAP and others interested in bidding for BlackBerry?

LG, Samsung, Google, Intel, Cisco, SAP and others interested in bidding for BlackBerry?
BlackBerry's board, as you probably know, has agreed to sell the company to its biggest stockholder. While Fairfax Financial agreed to pay $4.7 billion or $9 a share for the troubled smartphone manufacturer, under the terms of the deal Fairfax was supposed to deliver a merger agreement to BlackBerry by Friday. Failure to do so would reduce the time that Fairfax would be allowed to conduct its due-diligence which originally was supposed to end on November 4th. At this point, we are not sure if this condition was met by the bidder.

We've already heard that another financial firm, Cerberus Capital Management was interested in the company. But a Wall Street analyst, Pierre Ferragu at Bernstein Research, predicts that BlackBerry will burn through most of its cash by February 2015, making an acquisition by a financial firm more difficult. The deal with Fairfax has generated plenty of skepticism because of a lack of financing. If BlackBerry pulls out, it will owe Fairfax a $150 million break-up fee.

On Saturday morning, a new group of potential bidders was mentioned in a published report. All of the names are non-financial tech companies which means that they are less interested in cash in the bank and more interested in patents, the companies enterprise business including BES, and to a lesser degree, the current BlackBerry 10 lineup. With nearly $1 billion of BlackBerry Z10 units written off by the Canadian based manufacturer, there could be some other assets with a declining value. The value of BlackBerry's patent portfolio and licenses will probably be cut in half over the next 18 months, BlackBerry itself says in an official filing.

Before we list some of the new names supposedly interested in BlackBerry, let's try to put a value on the company. According to analysts, BES could be worth $3 to $4.5 billion. The Intellectual Property portfolio is probably worth $2 to $3 billion and the company now has $3.1 billion in the bank with no debt. This adds up to as high as $10.6 billion. But we shouldn't count on the cash and the patents could be down to a value of $1.5 billion at best within a year and a half.  That would bring the value of the company down to $5.5 billion, not much wriggle room from the current bid by Fairfax Financial. And problems continue to pop up. Just Friday, Canada's largest carrier Rogers, right in BlackBerry country, announced that it will not carry the upcoming high-end BlackBerry Z30 handset.

The tech names said to be looking at BlackBerry include Google (which probably covets BES), Intel, Cisco, SAP, and the Korean giants LG and Samsung. All but Samsung refused to comment. Samsung could not respond immediately.

BlackBerry has a special five member committee of board members looking after the sale of the company. The committee consists of Timothy Dattels, Chairman Barbara Stymiest, Chief Executive Thorsten Heins, Richard Lynch and Bert Nordberg. In a situation like this, BlackBerry and its board have separate advisers because you never know when there might be a conflict. Advising BlackBerry are a pair of Wall Street takeover veterans, JP Morgan Chase & Co and RBC Capital Markets. The board is being advised by a trio of well worn Wall Street players. Perella Weinberg Partners is supposedly handling strategy for BlackBerry's board while legal advice is coming from high paid law firms Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Torys LLP.

The iPhone 5C's Price Is Cut in Half at Best Buy After Just Two Weeks on the Market

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
The iPhone 5C in all its colorful glory.
Best Buy is selling the iPhone 5C for only $50 with a two-year contract for the next four days.
The phone normally sells for $100 on contract, which means Best Buy is selling it for half-off.
Consumers who buy the 5C at Best Buy get a $50 gift card that they can apply to the phone on the spot, says Joanna Stern at ABC News. Best Buy is also doing the same deal for Samsung's Galaxy S4. The iPhone 5S does not get a discount.  The deal runs from Oct. 3 to Oct. 7.
The 5C has only been out for two weeks now, so this sudden discount is pretty surprising.
We're not sure what, if anything, it says about sales of the 5C.
Analysts have been saying that demand for the 5S is significantly stronger than the 5C, which makes sense in the U.S. The 5S is $100 more than the 5C on a two-year contract. Over the life of the phone, it's worth it to pay the extra $100.

Nigeria: Plane crashes after takeoff from Lagos

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — A chartered airplane nosedived into the ground and burst into flames meters (yards) from tanks of aviation fuel, minutes after taking off from Lagos airport Thursday, Nigerian officials said.
Officials said there were casualties among the 20 passengers and seven crew members but refused to confirm reports of several deaths as plumes of smoke rose from the site.
A fireman on the scene told the The Associated Press they had recovered nine bodies from the plane. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to give information to reporters.
Five survivors among 20 passengers have been rushed to the hospital as rescue efforts continued after the crash which happened at 9:20 a.m. (0820 GMT) Thursday, said Federal Aviation Agency spokesman Yakubu Dati.

"We have put out the fire and our priority continues to be rescuing survivors," he told The Associated Press hours later.
The front of the aircraft was completely destroyed, indicating it was the first part to hit the ground. The wrecked remains, surrounded by security officers and rescue workers, lay about 30 meters (yards) from massive tanks storing aviation fuel.

Local news reports said the plane was carrying mourners and the body of former Ondo state Gov. Olusegun Agagu, who died on Sept. 13.

Dati said Agagu's casket and the black box that records data from the aircraft had been recovered. He said the plane was a Brazilian-made turboprop Embraer-120.
Police Commissioner Waheed Sanau said the plane was chartered from Associated Airline to fly from Lagos to Akure in Ondo state and crashed into open land near a tollgate shortly after taking off.
The pilot detected a fault soon after taking off and tried to return to the airport for an emergency landing but did not make it, said another police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Lagos airport is not included in his duties. He said aviation officials were discussing a possible engine failure.
Nigerian airlines and airports have a notoriously poor safety record.
