The second trailer for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" just premiered online, giving us a bigger look at what trouble is in store for Bilbo Baggins and his company of Middle-earth creatures on the second leg of their three-part journey.

The "Desolation of Smaug" picks up right where "An Unexpected Journey" left off. Biblo, Gandalf, Thorin, and the rest of the dwarves just narrowly escaped an encounter with goblins, orcs, and wargs, and their destination, the Lonely Mountain, is finally within sight. The second leg of the adventure features some of the books most iconic characters and imagery, including Beorn, the enormous man who can take the shape of a bear, Bard, the good bowman that plays a key role in the finale, and Smaug, the legendary dragon and treasure thief.

Just like the previous trailer for "The Desolation of Smaug," the preview saves its look at Smaug until the very end. The first trailer gave us a full view of the monster's head, and this latest look at the film delivers on something many fans were anticipating. Benedict Cumberbatch provided the thunderous voice for Smaug, and once again the "Star Trek Into Darkness" actor is adding a great deal of foreboding to a teaser.

The second installment in Peter Jackson's prequel trilogy also features a return to the screen for one of the most popular characters from "The Lord of the Rings." Orlando Bloom is back as Legolas, the elf that would eventually accompany Bilbo's nephew Frodo on his journey to destroy the ring found in "An Unexpected Journey." In "The Desolation of Smaug," he placed squarely in the middle of a conflict between Thranduil, the elf king played by Lee Pace, and Tauriel, a new character played by "Lost's" Evangeline Lilly.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opens in theaters on December 13.
