Assistant Coach of the Golden Eaglets, Emmanuel Amuneke has said that no sentiments were used in selecting the Nigerian side bidding for a record fourth FIFA U-17 World Cup trophy in the United Arab Emirates.
The Eaglets have been the team to toast to given their impressive run so far in the competition, where they have scored 18 goals in four matches.
As the team tackle Uruguay today, Amuneke, a former African player of the year winner, told Saturday Sports Vanguard that the coaching crew selected only the best and young players to represent Nigeria in a competition that the country has won three times.
Amuneke said that the technical crew wanted to leave a lasting legacy of trust and quality, which in turn would see the current set progressing to do the nation proud in the Flying Eagles, Olympic Eagles and Super Eagles.
“The secret of our little success here is that we have stuck to giving Nigeria only the best team. The boys you see here were carefully selected, devoid of sentiments. They were the best available and no interest was used in picking them.
“We have come to a realize that serving the country is a job that must be done with the utmost integrity and sincerity because today we are here but we would not be here tomorrow, so we do not want to leave a bad foundation for others to build on.
“Having all played for our country, we know that the only way to make a mark is to give the country only the best and we are happy that these players are living up to expectations.
“The truth is that we all must give our best to ensure that the legacies of this team would transcend to the Flying Eagles and up to the Super Eagles, where we see them doing great things for the country
in the future. We were honest in the selection of the players and that is why you see that they are all doing well.
“The beauty of this team is that any of the players can score. They are conscious of the team’s objective and we are proud of what they have done thus far”, added Amuneke.
